Belarus calls for coordinated action to step up fight against money laundering

MINSK, 24 May (BelTA) – Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Valentin Rybakov participated in a side event on sustainable development financing and tax cooperation at the United Nations headquarters in New York on 23 May, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Valentin Rybakov mentioned the results of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development held in July 2015 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and emphasized the importance of mobilizing domestic resources for sustainable development and strengthening the tax system as one of the ways for the countries to mobilize resources for investment in development. The Belarusian diplomat noted that given the globalized nature of business and finance, there are limits to what countries can do on their own through domestic policy, and called for joint steps to enhance taxation capacities, strengthen anti-money-laundering measures, and arrange mutual legal assistance.

Valentin Rybakov emphasized the importance of these issues for middle-income countries and the need to take into account the needs of such countries in the international cooperation.

The event was organized by the Permanent Mission of Panama to the United Nations in cooperation with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in connection with the Second UN Economic and Social Council Forum on Financing for Development follow-up.
