Belarus attends EU-EaP ministerial meeting on environment and climate

MINSK, 19 October (BelTA) – The Belarusian delegation led by Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Andrei Kovkhuto took part in the first European Union (EU) and Eastern Partnership (EaP) formal ministerial meeting dedicated to environment and climate action policies in Luxembourg, BelTA learned from the website of the Belarusian ministry.

The initiative to hold the meeting of the kind was voiced by Belarus during the informal dialogue of the Eastern Partnership Ministries of Environment in Minsk on 29 June 2015. The initiative was supported by representatives of the EaP member states and the European Commission.

The major objective of the meeting was to discuss problems and opportunities for cooperation in environment protection and climate change between the EU and EaP countries. The meeting highlighted the issues of environmental governance and the green economy. Andrei Kovkhuto delivered a speech on Belarus' progress in the introduction of the green economy principles.

The participants of the meeting adopted a Ministerial Declaration, confirming their joint commitment to stepping up cooperation on environmental challenges.

Andrei Kovkhuto also met with European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella to discuss priorities and main trends in the development of environmental cooperation between Belarus and the European Union.
