Ambassador: UK seeks to boost trade with Belarus after Brexit

MINSK, 12 September (BelTA) – It is important for the UK to bolster political and trade ties with Belarus after Brexit, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Jacqueline Perkins told journalists after presenting her letters of credence to Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 12 September, BelTA has learned.

Brexit gives us an excellent opportunity to cultivate relations with a lot of countries. I believe we will continue cooperating with the European Union because we are leaving the EU but not Europe. This is why I look forward to good relations with all countries, including Belarus, the ambassador said.

Jacqueline Perkins stressed the importance of fostering political relations with Belarus. This is very important for us. So is the development of trade relations. Trade and economic relations are important for the UK in general and especially after Brexit, she added.

Jacqueline Perkins said it is her first appointment as an ambassador. She hopes that Belarus-UK relations will develop in a positive way in the future.

Jacqueline Perkins also said that she is studying the Belarusian language. The ambassador already speaks Russian and Arabic.
