The Battle of Lesnaya, one of the major battles of the Great Northern War between a Russian army commanded by Peter I of Russia and a Swedish army led by Adam Ludwig Lewenhaupt took place on 28 September 1708. The memorial was erected in the village of Lesnaya, Slavgorod Dstrict, to honor the 200th anniversary of the victory of the Russian army in the battle.
