War monuments in Belarus

Mound of Glory (Smolevichi District). The lofty 35.6m memorial complex was erected on an artificial hill that was made from soil brought from the battlefields of nine hero cities of the former Soviet Union.











Khatyn Memorial (Logoisk District). On 22 March 1943 the Nazi surrounded a small village of Khatyn after partisans had attacked a German mechanized column six kilometers from the village. As a punishment, all the villagers, including the elderly, women and children, were huddled in a barn and burnt alive.








Memorial complex commemorating child victims of fascism (Zhlobin District, Gomel Oblast). The complex was built in the village of Krasny Bereg where the concentration camp Peresylki was set up during the war. The concentration camp was meant for children aged 8-14 who were later sent to Germany.











Stalin Line (Minsk District). The Stalin Line fortifications included defense installations on the territory of Belarus. The Stalin Line memorial complex became a symbol of heroic fight of the Soviet people against the Nazi invaders.








Pamyat memorial complex. The complex was erected on the bank of the Iput River by residents of Dobrush. The names of all 700 soldiers and officers who died defending Dobrush were engraved in the monument.





Breakthrough memorial complex (Ushachi District, Vitebsk Oblast). In this area partisans broke the German blockade in May 1944.


On 11 September 1942 the Nazi burnt the village of Dremlevo (Zhabinka District) together with its residents. A total of 196 people, including women, the elderly and children were burnt. The village never came alive again. A memorial complex was built there in 1982.


Brest Fortress The Brest Hero-Fortress Memorial Complex (Brest). On 22 June 1941 the garrison of the Brest Fortress was the first to confront the German army. The Nazi thought they could seize the fortress within one day, although the resistance went on until the end of July 1941.








Victory Square (Minsk). A 38-meter granite obelisk topped by a 3-meter Victory order was erected in the Victory Square. Plinths with capsules of land from hero cities were placed in the square. A memorial hall commemorating the heroes who died defending Belarus was opened under the Victory Monument.








Buinichi Field Memorial Complex (Mogilev). On this field the Nazi was halted for 23 days by the 388th rifle division, policemen, students of the NKVD school, and 12,000 militiamen
