Live and remember! Archive photos of Brest Hero Fortress

Nearly 50 years ago, on 25 September 1971, a memorial complex was unveiled on the site of the Brest Fortress to commemorate the heroic defenders of the fortress.

The Brest Fortress defenders represented more than 30 ethnicities of the USSR. They performed one of the greatest feats of the Soviet people in the history of the Great Patriotic War. The heroic defense of the fortress lasted from 22 June to the end of July 1941. The enemy could not get hold of a single banner of the military units that fought in the fortress.

In the postwar years, the history of the Brest Fortress defense became a symbol of heroism, loyalty to the oath and love for the Motherland. On 8 May 1965, the fortress was awarded the honorary title of the Hero Fortress. The Museum of the Brest Fortress Defense opened in November 1956. In May 1968, the construction of the memorial complex was launched.

The museum is in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus (Class 1).

The staff of the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex was awarded a special prize of the president of Belarus for cultural and art workers for their significant contribution to the preservation of the historical truth about the Great Patriotic War, the implementation of the Union State project to restore and preserve the fortress (2018–2020). In 2021 the memorial complex was awarded the Order of Francysk Skaryna.
