Slovakian honorary consulate opens in Belarusian Brest

BREST, 17 October (BelTA) – A solemn ceremony to open an honorary consulate of Slovakia took place in Brest on 17 October, BelTA has learned.

The authority of the new diplomatic representative office will extend to Brest Oblast and Grodno Oblast. Director General of OAO Prodtovary Mikhail Kozich was appointed honorary consul. During the ceremony Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Slovakia to Belarus Josef Migas noted that it was the second consulate of Slovakia in Belarus. The first one started working in Vitebsk in September 2014.

The ambassador said: “A new stage in Belarus-Slovakia relations has been marked this year. Vigorous development of joint projects has begun. We should bolster our ties across the board. The consulate in Brest will help us do it. The mission's primary task is to advance trade and economic ties.” Josef Migas added that joint projects between Slovakia and Brest Oblast and Grodno Oblast are in development. “The projects are on the table. They are being discussed. Money requirements are being calculated. Parties responsible are being sought. I hope that the projects will be published next year and their practical implementation will begin,” said the ambassador.

Josef Migas believes that matters of culture, education, and tourism are as important. “Your children can enjoy recreation in Slovakia. Last year we issued 700 free visas to kids from Mozyr District. This decision should be systemic in order to get as many Belarusians as possible acquainted with our country. The consul will also have to encourage as many Slovak tourists as possible to visit Belarus. You have a beautiful country with beautiful cities, nature, and versatile culture. Children and young people should get to know it,” stressed the ambassador.

Deputy Chairman of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee Oleg Velichko agreed with Josef Migas. He said that tourism should become the engine to faster advance relations between Belarusian and Slovak regions.

The honorary consulate of Slovakia is the ninth diplomatic mission in Brest. According to Brest Mayor Alexander Rogachuk, their presence enhances the city's status and makes it more attractive from the point of view of investments. “It is very good that Slovakia will have a consulate in our city. Brest has established partnership relations with Slovak Vranov nad Topou. We have greatly advanced our contacts in the last three years. If we talk about Belarus-Slovakia cooperation as a whole, this year our trade turnover has increased by 160%,” concluded the mayor.
