Shumilin: Belarus' market of intellectual property steadily developing

MINSK, 4 May (BelTA) – The Belarusian market of intellectual property has been steadily developing, Chairman of the State Science and Technology Committee Alexander Shumilin said at the opening of the national workshop to discuss the commercialization of the results of scientific and technical activity, its legal regulation and practical experience. The workshop is marking 25 years of the Belarusian intellectual property system, BelTA has learned.

“The market of intellectual property has been steadily developing in our country. We understand that without intellectual property protection it is impossible to develop science, create innovations and build a knowledge-driven economy. The cost of intellectual property objects is growing throughout the world. Our domestic market is relatively small. Therefore, we need to go international and we are well on our way. The National Center of Intellectual Property has been working hard within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). A decision has already been taken on issuing Eurasian economic patents. Our patent law meets the international standards. We are members of 18 international agreements in the sector. Our intellectual property protection system goes in line with the worldwide standards as well. Every year the National Center of Intellectual Property receives more than 7,000 applications. About 25,000 people from 50 countries use the website of our patent body on a monthly basis. In 2016 over 750 agreements were concluded on the transfer of rights on industrial property units. Their number increased by 20%. The number of applications for patents is on the rise as well,” said Alexander Shumilin.

In his words, today the growth of trade in intellectual property exceeds the growth of trade in any other types of property in the world. “The world market of intellectual property is demonstrating a 12% increase, while the global industrial market posts only 2-3%. Brand names have become more valuable intangible assets which often exceed the cost of the fixed capital. The aggregate cost of licenses on the use of industrial property units and technologies worldwide has exceeded $50 billion a year. According to experts, the volume of sales on the international market of high technology products made with the use of intellectual property reaches $2 trillion a year,” noted the Chairman of the State Science and Technology Committee.

The national workshop on the commercialization of the results of scientific and technical activity, its legal regulation and practical experience is held in Minsk on 4-5 May to mark 25 years of the Belarusian intellectual property system. Speaking at the forum will be representatives of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), European Organization for Nuclear research (CERN), the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, and also Belarusian experts. The seminar has gathered more than 200 participants. The event is organized by the National Center of Intellectual Property jointly with the State Science and Technology Committee and the World Intellectual Property Organization.
