PM: Belarus, Thailand have potential to boost mutual trade

MINSK, 27 June (BelTA) - Belarus and Thailand have the potential to increase mutual trade manifold, Belarus Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said as he met with Chairman of the Thai National Legislative Assembly of Thailand Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, BelTA has learnt.

“The volume of mutual trade between our countries is not yet high. In 2015 the trade amounted to just over $100 million. But this is only the beginning. There is a potential to increase it manifold in the next few years. Joint implementation of major projects is a good opportunity to strengthen our cooperation,” Andrei Kobyakov noted.

According to him, Belarus views Thailand as an important and promising partner in Southeast Asia, an influential state and credible participant in international relations, one of the leaders of the ASEAN. The intensification of contacts between our countries at all levels creates a solid foundation for mutually beneficial cooperation. “Belarus and Thailand share similar positions on key issues on the international agenda. We hope your country will continue holding a positive position in the future,” the Belarusian head of government noted.

When speaking about the areas of joint work, Andrei Kobyakov singled out trade cooperation. “We offer mutual deliveries. We will support joint projects to supply rubber and traditional agricultural products into our market,” the Belarusian Prime Minister noted.

Andrei Kobyakov noted that Belarus is among the leaders in mechanical engineering. “Belarus has the expertise and unique technologies. We are ready to supply the whole range of engineering products to Thailand. Talks are underway on the delivery of grain harvesters, BelAZ trucks. We would also like to promote MTZ tractors assembled in Cambodia to the Thai market. Bearing in mind the plans of the Bangkok authorities to upgrade bus fleet, we are ready to supply modern and reliable buses,” Andrei Kobyakov noted.

Andrei Kobyakov also spoke of the benefits of cooperation with Belarus. “We are ready to offer modern financing mechanisms, very attractive terms and conditions of sale of Belarusian machinery. These are export loans, international leasing. We also view as promising the production of equipment which your country needs. The Minsk Automobile Plant is currently in talks on one of such projects,” Andrei Kobyakov said.

Another important area of cooperation is the exports of potash fertilizers. “We are fully ready to meet Thailand's needs, including within the long-term mutually beneficial contracts. With your support and participation we would like to establish solid ties with Thai partners with a view to advancing Belarusian products to your country,” the Belarusian head of state said.

In his words, establishing an intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation can be an important and efficient instrument in stepping up bilateral relations. “We suggest the commission should ne formed as soon as possible in order to get down with the development of concrete areas. We also need to expedite the work on the agreement on cooperation in trade and economy between Belarus and Thailand which envisages such an intergovernmental commission,” said Andrei Kobyakov.

“We have a lot of plans to implement. We hope that with joint efforts we will secure a qualitatively new level for our relations,” the Prime Minister said.
