Nuclear power plant to secure Belarus' powerful export potential

MINSK, 4 September (BelTA) – The commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will secure the country's powerful export potential, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Olga Prudnikova on 4 September.

“Once the nuclear power plant is commissioned, Belarus will get powerful export potential. No doubt about it,” stressed the official. Speaking about the geography of sales and the relevant agreements, she noted that negotiations are underway with all the partner states, including as part of the work to create a common electricity market in the Eurasian Economic Union.

“At present Belarus sells electricity to neighboring Baltic states among other countries. Some 700 million kWh has been exported so far this year,” noted the deputy energy minister.

Apart from that, Baltic states often contact Belarus to request extra power in case of electricity emergencies.

Speaking about domestic consumption, Olga Prudnikova said that the Belarusian nuclear power plant will be able to generate 18 million kWh per year while the country consumes 38 billion kWh. “Electricity consumption has increased by 1.5% this year in comparison with last year. If the trend continues, the output of the nuclear power plant will reach 40%,” added the official.
