MOSCOW, 31 May (BelTA) – Lithuania's pullout from the transnational power grid that unites Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania (BRELL), will not affect the operation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk during the Atomexpo forum in Moscow on 31 May.
“Lithuania has informed the Belarusian side that it has plans to disconnect itself from the BRELL power grid in the future,” said Mikhail Mikhadyuk. He specified the operation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant will not be affected by the move. “Our power plant will take care of the basic power load for Belarusian consumers,” stressed the official.
“Belarus provides electricity to Lithuania in emergencies virtually every month. If Lithuanians decide to pull out from the BRELL power grid, they can go right ahead. Time will tell whether it is the right decision. Consumers rule on the energy market. They always choose to buy cheaper electricity,” added Mikhail Mikhadyuk.
The agreement on the parallel operation of the national power grids of Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania was signed in 2011. The agreement stipulates guidelines for organizing the joint operation of the transnational power grid.
