New opportunities for Belarus and Hungary in financial cooperation

MINSK, 30 September (BelTA) – New opportunities for Belarus and Hungary are opening up in cooperation in the financial sector, Belarus' Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alena Kupchyna said after the 7th meeting of the intergovernmental Belarusian-Hungarian commission on trade, economic and sci-tech cooperation in Minsk on 29 September, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Alena Kupchyna co-chaired the meeting with her Hungarian counterpart, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Laszlo Szabo. She described the talks as successful: “We have discussed a wide range of issues that traditionally make part of our bilateral agenda. This was cooperation in industry, science and technology. Special accent was made on cooperation in the financial sector where new opportunities are opening up, including the cooperation between Hungary's Eximbank and our Belarusbank, and also the insurance agency Eximgarant of Belarus. We also stressed that unfortunately the current geopolitical and geo-economic factors in our region leave a negative impact on the trade and economic relations between our countries. That is why we have recently witnessed a downward movement in the bilateral trade figures, although it was not big.”

According to Alena Kupchyna, “on the back of this negative trend in the region, we have recently reached a considerable increase in the volume of services, by 45% as against the previous years (in comparison with 2013 – BelTA's note), first of all, thanks to the development of cooperation between Belarus and Hungary in the transport and tourism sectors.”

The deputy minister also said that although the meeting focused mainly on economic matters the parties discussed other issues, including the cultural ones, as well. She stressed that Belarus and Hungary are confident in further successful cooperation since Belarus and Hungary, being two friendly states, enjoy the robust relations of solidarity and partnership. “We have no unsettled issues in our political agenda, and it is very important,” Alena Kupchyna said.

She added that the Belarusian-Hungarian business forum, which traditionally precedes the meeting of the intergovernmental commission, was also successful. Partaking in the forum were 16 Hungarian companies and 31 Belarusian enterprises. Concrete agreements were made to boost bilateral cooperation further.
