Myasnikovich suggests wider role of local self-government in addressing social and economic issues

MINSK, 24 August (BelTA) – The role of local self-government in the implementation of Belarus' social and economic development priorities should be increased, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich said at the expanded-participation meeting of the Presidium of the Council of the Republic on 24 August, BelTA has learned.

“Local self-government needs to contribute more to the implementation of the country's social and economic development priorities. The efficient local self-government can become a powerful resource for the development of the country's economic potential, promotion of a favorable doing business climate, enhancement of investment attractiveness of regions, and the creation of new manufacturing facilities and jobs,” noted Mikhail Myasnikovich.

Addressing the chairpersons of the oblast and Minsk councils of deputies, Speaker of the Council of the Republic stressed that MPs should generate proposals to address local issues, work more actively with people and labor collectives.

“Monitoring groups and MPs groups should intensify work on site jointly with chairpersons of local councils of deputies, use the opportunities and reserves of every district. It is important to do it promptly while local budgets for the next fiscal year are being drafted,” Mikhail Myasnikovich stressed.

In his words, councils of deputies should take concrete decisions at their sessions. “There can be few of them, but they should help solve certain issues in the interests of people,” the Speaker of the Council of the Republic said.
