Mikhadyuk: BelNPP site in full incompliance with safety standards

MOSCOW, 30 May (BelTA) – Claims that the Belarusian NPP site falls short of the safety standards are unsubstantiated, Belarus Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk said when talking with Belarusian and foreign journalists on the sidelines of the international forum Atomexpo in Moscow, BelTA has learned.

“The site was selected strictly in accordance with the IAEA recommendations. In response to complaints we have repeatedly asked: what point of the IAEA recommendations we have violated? Nobody can give an answer,” he noted.

Mikhail Mikhadyuk noted that Belarus has repeatedly explained why Ostrovets has been chosen for the construction of the nuclear power plant and has communicated this information to Lithuania on at least ten occasions.

Initially Belarus was exploring the eastern part but then considered other regions as well. “IAEA experts noted that Belarus did an unprecedentedly large amount of research to determine the location of the nuclear power plant construction,” the Deputy Minister stressed.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is a project to build an AES-2006 type nuclear power plant 18km away from Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The BelNPP will have two power-generating units with the total output capacity of up to 2,400MW (2x1,200MW). In line with the general contract for building the nuclear power plant the first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2018, with the second one to go online in 2020.
