Industry Ministry to defend interests of Belarusian lift manufacturer in Russia

MINSK, 12 October (BelTA) – The Belarusian Industry Ministry intends to defend interests of the Mogilev-based lift manufacturer Mogilevliftmash on the Russian lift equipment market. Belarusian Industry Minister Vitaly Vovk made the statement on 12 October as he commented on anticompetitive measures implemented on the Russian transboundary market of lift equipment, BelTA has learned.

The Industry Ministry informed the Belarusian Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade (MART) about the measures meant to reduce competition on the Russian lift equipment market. In particular, in August 2016 the Russian Industry and Trade Ministry sent recommendations to regional funds in charge of overhauling apartment buildings telling them to opt for lift equipment of Russian make. The measure disallows Belarusian lift manufacturers to sell their latest products in Russia, including those made using Russian materials and components. In view of the fact the Belarusian Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade asked the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia to evaluate these actions of the Russian Industry and Trade Ministry for compliance with the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty and the Russian law on competition. The Belarusian side requested the Russian agency to take measures to fix the situation.

The Belarusian Industry Minister said he believes that market rules should be equal for all the lift equipment manufacturers. “I am not saying we feel the squeeze that much but rules of the game must be equal for everyone. This is why we have to defend our rights,” said the official. “Mogilevliftmash has set up a number of enterprises in Russia. We believe it has reached the required localization parameters. I cannot say the same about some other enterprises posing as genuinely Russian manufacturers.”

According to Vitaly Vovk, at the peak of its performance back in the USSR times Mogilevliftmash made about 14,000 lifts per annum, with the product range limited to two models only. At present the company offers over 130 product titles, including economy and business class products, cargo lifts, lifts for people with disabilities. The company also makes escalators and intends to offer travelators to the market soon. Mogilevliftmash makes roughly 13,000 lifts per annum.
