IMF: Discussions on Belarus' new program will continue in Washington in April

MINSK, 24 March (BelTA) – The discussions on a possible IMF-supported program for Belarus will be continued in Washington DC in April, Gerry Rice, Director of the IMF Communications Department, told a press briefing in Washington, the United States. The video of the press briefing was published on the IMF website, BelTA has learned.

“I can confirm that the IMF discussions with the Belarusian authorities have taken place, continue with a view to a possible IMF-supported program. On 16 March in Minsk an IMF team did meet with President Lukashenko at his invitation. The discussions were centered on the economic and social situation, pace of reform in Belarus. I can tell you that one feature of the discussions and an emphasis from the IMF staff team was on the stronger social safety net to protect those most in need in Belarus. I can tell you the discussions are expected to continue into the spring meetings here in Washington in April,” Gerry Rice stressed.

The 2017 Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund will take place in Washington DC on 21-23 April.

Belarus-IMF cooperation was discussed at the meeting between Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and IMF Mission Chief for Belarus Peter Dohlman on 16 March.

As was earlier reported, Belarus hopes for a new program with the IMF to start in H1 2017. The country seeks a $3.5 billion loan from the IMF.
