IFC: Belarus is opening for private European investments

VIENNA, 24 May (BelTA) - Belarus is opening for private European investments, Head of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Representative Office for Belarus Olga Shcherbina told reporters on the sidelines of the Belarusian-European Investment Forum on 24 May, BelTA has learned.

“The forum in Vienna is a landmark event. It means that Belarus is opening for private European investments. And we appreciate this step,” Olga Shcherbina said.

In her words, the International Finance Corporation would like to cooperate with Austrian companies in Belarus. “We are ready to implement joint projects with Belarusian and Austrian companies. We would like to get a foothold in Belarus,” Olga Shcherbina said.

The International Finance Corporation came to Belarus in 1992. “Our first investments were made in 2003. We have sponsored over 50 projects to the tune of $650 million since then. Now we are planning to invest $75-80 million every year. We finance such sectors as real estate, retail trade, production of construction materials, and are going to continue vigorous investment activities in Belarus,” Olga Shcherbina concluded.

The Vienna Forum: Promoting EU Investments in Belarus is held in Austria's capital city on 24 May. The event is organized by the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry together with the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the instruction of Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov. Partaking in the event are more than 120 people. The forum in attended by businessmen from Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Latvia, Hungary, Slovakia. Partaking in the forum are President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber Christoph Leitl, representatives of the European Commission and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, etc.
