Grain yield in Belarus in 2016 above last year's

MINSK, 25 July (BelTA) – This year the grain yield in Belarus is above last year's, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Vladimir Grakun.

The grain and leguminous crops harvesting campaign in Belarus is already past one million tonnes. The official pointed out that this year's gross yield and specific yield are a bit higher. “Gomel Oblast agricultural enterprises have increased their yield a lot — they are getting extra five centners of grain per hectare,” said Vladimir Grakun.

According to the latest data, grain yield across the country has averaged 33.5 centners per hectare, 3.4 centners above last year's figure.

Vladimir Grakun noted that due to rainy weather the grain harvesting conditions in Belarus are somewhat worse than last year. Besides, strong winds witnessed in some parts of the country in July resulted in downed crops. The Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister underlined that Belarusian farmers have perfected the technology of harvesting grain in such fields. “We are now encouraging everyone to keep up the pace and quality of harvesting in order to gather in everything we have in the field without losses,” he concluded.
