Gomel Oblast Governor: Social and economic development focused on enhancing living conditions

GOMEL, 19 May (BelTA) – The social and economic development program of the country in general and Gomel Oblast in particular is aimed at enhancing people's living conditions, Gomel Oblast Governor Vladimir Dvornik said in his welcoming speech at the Gomel Economic Forum on 19 May, BelTA has learned.

Achieving the goal will mean an innovative breakthrough and better competitive edge for the national economy. The shaping factor here is the efforts to attract foreign investment in the region. “I hope our today's meeting will facilitate the strengthening of the current interregional ties and provide an opportunity of establishing new business and friendly contacts with the assistance of the diplomatic corps,” the governor said.

The Gomel Economic Forum has a status of the main business event in the Belarusian southeast region. 78 investment documents worth almost $2 billion have been signed as part of the forum. More than half of them have been already implemented or are in the pipeline. The real investment has already exceeded $965 million. “I am confident that today's forum will also be successful and promising for both its organizers and our current and potential partners,” Vladimir Dvornik stressed.

With its economic potential, Gomel Oblast occupies an important place on the world's investment map and constantly expands its international cooperation. Over the past three years, for instance, Gomel Oblast has established twinning ties and social and economic relations with the regions of the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and also Azerbaijan, Armenia, Serbia, Vietnam, Georgia, Italy, and China. “Today Gomel Oblast has more than 200 agreements and protocols of cooperation with dozens of countries,” he said.

Taking part in the Gomel Economic Forum are almost 700 representatives of 15 countries. The forum has featured 155 investment projects, 137 property units for doing business and 191 land plots for acquisition. The Gomel forum has also featured 14 scientific projects for joint implementation.

Ten documents, including two agreements and eight memorandums of understanding, were signed as part of a plenary session. In particular, an investment agreement on setting up the production to apply polymer coating on metal surface was concluded with the participation of the Belarusian-Danish company BySteel.

The Gomel Economic Forum was first held in 2004.
