Geologists plan to continue looking for diamonds in Belarus

MINSK, 1 February (BelTA) – The search for diamonds will be continued in Belarus, Sergei Mamchik, the head of the Geology Department at the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry, said at the BelTA press center on 1 February.

Diamond-bearing rocks have not been found in Belarus yet. However, geologists believe it is likely that there are such rocks in Belarus. Therefore, the research will be continued in the future although there will be no large-scale explorations.

At the same time, according to Sergei Mamchik, this work can be expanded with the participation of a private investor. “If a private company has an interest, we will consider allocating it promising land plots for research,” he stressed.

Diamonds are formed in the Earth's mantle and are mined from kimberlite pipes (diatremes). Global experience shows that only one in 100 pipes is diamond-bearing. All investments in the search for diamonds pay off if such a pipe is found.
