European Commission sees great potential for wind energy in Belarus

MINSK, 13 December (BelTA) – Belarus has a great potential for generating electricity using wind energy, BelTA learned from Vassilis Maragos, head of the department for cooperation with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, and Eastern Partnership countries at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations.

The European Commission representative said: “We are now preparing one of the first wind turbine projects in Belarus. The development of renewable sources of energy creates new opportunities for doing business. Belarus is a country with a large potential in the sphere of innovations and research. We would also like to mention Belarus' potential as a wind energy producer and supplier for the entire region.”

Vassilis Maragos also noted that the European Union will continue financing projects in Belarusian towns and cities within the framework of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy initiative with a view to reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

Vassilis Maragos took part in the international conference “Covenant of Mayors East: Joint actions in the area of climate and energy”, which is scheduled to take place in Minsk on 13-14 December. The conference gathered over 150 representatives of government agencies from Belarus and countries parties to the Covenant of Mayors (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine), European Union agencies, international financial institutions, the cities that have signed the covenant in Belarus. The event is supposed to enable effective cooperation between municipal government agencies, public organizations, and national government agencies in the sphere of power engineering and climate.
