Electricity rates after Belarusian nuclear power plant launch revealed

SOCHI, 14 May (BelTA) – Belarus will try to reduce electricity rates for the real sector of the economy after the nuclear power plant is commissioned but a lot will depend on Belarusian-Russian agreements on natural gas, BelTA learned from Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Vladimir Semashko during the Atomexpo forum in Sochi on 14 May.

At present Belarusians pay about 85% of the cost of electricity. It is necessary to raise the figure up to 100% within two years but only when salaries and pensions grow larger. Belarusians pay 16.8% of the cost of heating but no instructions to raise the figure to 100% have been given. “If we raise prices by six times, who will bear it? Even well-off people or medium-income people will not. We don't intend to accomplish the task in the near future,” explained the deputy prime minister.

It is necessary to reduce electricity rates in the real sector of the economy to at least 10 cents per 1kWh (11 cents at present). In the future Belarus will try to reduce electricity rates to the Russian level.

The official said he believes that the prime cost of electricity generation will go down. New power plants are the case in point. Once the nuclear power plant is commissioned, electricity generation will be even cheaper for Belarus, Vladimir Semashko was convinced.
