EAEU digital transformation program for consideration of heads of state by year end

ASTANA, 14 August (BelTA) – A program for the digital transformation of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) will be submitted for consideration of the EAEU heads of state by the end of the year, BelTA learned from Tigran Sargsyan, Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), on 14 August.

The official said: “The heads of government have charged us with presenting initiatives that can help further digital transformation within a month. We've presented a list of such initiatives to our colleagues for discussion — about 10 projects — and are awaiting their proposals and remarks. After that we will forward them for consideration of the high-level working group, which has been established upon the instruction of the presidents.” The polished draft document will be discussed during the next session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in order to present the document before the heads of state at the end of the year.

According to the source, digital transformation was also discussed during the meeting with the president of Kazakhstan earlier that day. “Nursultan Nazarbayev also mentioned the importance of digital transformation. Pursuing a coordinated policy on the matter is also necessary because all our member states pay top-priority attention to the matter,” stressed Tigran Sargsyan. Russia has already adopted its digital program. Kazakhstan will present a program of its own soon. Kyrgyzstan is working on its own program. Belarus is preparing the relevant presidential decree. “We need all these programs to also contain chapters concerning our union,” said Tigran Sargsyan.

The chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission explained that other matters that had been discussed during the session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council were also related to digital transformation such as the ability to track the movement of goods.

A session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council took place in Astana, Kazakhstan on 14 August. The heads of government discussed 13 items on the agenda. A report on preparing the guidelines for implementing the EAEU's digital agenda was presented. Progress in the work on the agreement on a mechanism to track the movement of goods in the Eurasian Economic Union was discussed in detail.

The heads of government also discussed the draft agreement on pension benefits for people in the Eurasian Economic Union member states. The formation of a common electricity market and measures to pursue a coordinated transport policy were also in the center of attention.
