Domestic food production to fully satisfy EAEU demand soon

MOSCOW, 25 May (BelTA) – Food production inside the Eurasian Economic Union will be able to fully satisfy the domestic demand soon. The statement was made by Member of the Board (Minister) for Industry and Agribusiness Complex of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Sergei Sidorsky during the 22nd Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), the EEC press service told BelTA.

Sergei Sidorsky said: “The Eurasian Economic Union is a global player on the world agricultural and food market. We have to secure the sustainable development of agricultural output in order to provide the population with all the food it needs.”

The official stated that the Eurasian Economic Union uses uniform approaches to ensuring the balanced development of the common market. EAEU member states fully satisfy the domestic demand with domestic production as far as grain, vegetables, potatoes, vegetable oils, eggs, and sugar are concerned. In the near future the union will be able to satisfy the population's demand for virtually all products, including milk, poultry meat, and pork. The Eurasian Economic Union member states have the potential for increasing competitive production and developing the export of high-tech agribusiness products.

Sergei Sidorsky said: “Global agriculture prospects are determined by the development of modern digital technologies and precision farming systems. Meanwhile, the union is open to mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation, to the flow of foreign investments and technologies into agribusiness.”

In his words, in order to ensure food security, the five member states of the Eurasian Economic Union have to reduce their dependence on imported pedigree and genetic resources, rack up the production of forage, feed supplements, complex fertilizers, and crop protection agents in addition to developing the production of agricultural machines. The Eurasian Economic Commission has worked out a set of stimulating measures for each area of work. For instance, joint actions have been worked out to develop seed production and pedigree livestock farming in the Eurasian Economic Union. Measures have been worked out to support producers of agricultural machines. Measures have been taken to enable conditions for localizing the production of modern machines and high-tech resources for agriculture in the Eurasian Economic Union.

“Joint actions of our countries, cooperation with foreign partners will allow realizing the potential for increasing the volumes of competitive production and export. By doing that, we will make a tangible contribution to ensuring the global food security,” concluded Sergei Sidorsky.
