China suggests transporting Belarusian goods via railway route from Europe

BEIJING, 16 October (BelTA) – China suggests transporting Belarusian-made goods using railway containers as they return back from Europe to China's Chendgu, Liu Bin, Deputy Secretary General of the Department of European-Central Asian Affairs of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told the media on 16 October, BelTA has learned.

“Several dozen millions of tonnes of various cargoes have been transported in containers along the China-Europe railway route via Belarus up to date,” Liu Bin remarked. “Sometimes, however, these containers return to China empty. But we could use them to transport Belarusian goods on the way back to China,” the official said. In his words, this would benefit both sides.

Foreign journalists visited the Chengdu International Railway Port which already became an essential hub in the Belt and Road inititiave. This big railway port ensures continuous supplies of Chinese goods to Europe via Belarus' Brest. Now the travel time of freight trains along the 10,000km-long route Chengdu-Minsk-Warsaw has went down to 10 days. As many as 570,000 railway containers traveled this way in 2016. There are plans to increase this amount up to 600,000.
