Belarusian nuclear power plant promised upgraded fuel

SOCHI, 15 May (BelTA) – TVEL Fuel Company will modernize fuel for the Belarusian nuclear power plant, BelTA learned from the company's Senior Vice President for Commerce and International Business Oleg Grigoryev during the Atomexpo forum in Sochi on 15 May.

Oleg Grigoryev said that the Belarusian nuclear power plant has VVER-1200 units, this is why the Russian company will supply the latest fuel right from the start. “There is no doubt we are going to develop and improve this basic fuel and fulfill any requirements of the customer,” said the executive.

The general contract for building the Belarusian nuclear power plant provides for delivering enough fuel via Atomstroyexport Company to charge each power-generating unit one time and recharge them one more time later on. TVEL Fuel Company will supply fuel to the Belarusian nuclear power plant via a direct contract after that. All the deliveries will be made via the Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom.

“It doesn't matter whether we will supply fuel to the Belarusian nuclear power plant directly or not. It will definitely be good and surely state-of-the-art,” assured Oleg Grigoryev.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built using the Russian standard Generation III+ design AES-2006 near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, with the second one to go online in 2020.

TVEL Fuel Company is part of the Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom. The company comprises enterprises for fabricating nuclear fuel, for converting and enriching uranium, enterprises that make gas centrifuges, research and design divisions. TVEL Fuel Company is the only supplier of nuclear fuel for Russian nuclear power plants. TVEL Fuel Company provides nuclear fuel to 75 power reactors in 14 countries across the globe, research reactors in eight countries, and transport reactors for Russian nuclear-powered sea vessels. Every sixth power reactor in the world uses fuel made by TVEL Fuel Company.
