Belarusian agricultural industry expected to become more efficient

MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) - The Belarusian agricultural industry is expected to become more efficient, Belarus' Agriculture and Food Minister Leonid Zayats said in an interview with a TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“Given the state support that the domestic agriculture industry enjoys every year, it should increase the productivity of labor, the efficiency of production. Today, the costs in certain sectors of the domestic agriculture are 1.3 1.2 times higher than in European states, and we must recognize this fact. We see the reserves and know how to tap them,” Leonid Zayats said.

He also noted the increase in the number of agricultural companies who have become more advanced. “Some farms have come close to the level of Agrokombinat Snov. For the first time in the country's history four more farms reported the grain harvest of more than 100 centners per hectare, four companies have the milk output at 10 tonnes per cow and four districts reported 7 tonnes of milk production per cow. I do not want to say that Snov has performed poorly. On the contrary they surpassed their 2016 results,” the minister said.

Along with the large agricultural companies that ensure the food sufficiency of the country, household plots and private farms have been developing successfully as well.

When speaking about the economic indicators of the agricultural industry Leonid Zayats said: “This year we have approximately $5 billion in foreign currency earnings, which is $650 million more than a year prior (an increase of 15%). We made inroads in 18 new markets with which we cooperate today. Certainly we keep our positions strong in our traditional Russian market where we supply about 89% of all our output.”
