Belarus, Tajikistan in talks over joint ventures in pharmaceutics

MINSK, 13 July (BelTA) – Belarus and Tajikistan might elaborate a roadmap to set up joint pharmaceutical companies by the end of the year, BelTA learned from Belarus' Ambassador to Tajikistan with concurrent accreditation in Afghanistan Oleg Ivanov.

Representatives of the Belarusian pharmaceutical industry have visited Tajikistan several times this year. “Tajik partners asked us not only to scale up shipments of medicines, but also to set up some joint ventures on the ground, like packaging companies at the least. After all, the country has the necessary personnel. Dushanbe had several pharmaceutical enterprises during the soviet times, but they shut down, however, the premises remain. The Belarusian delegations that were on a visit to Tajikistan inspected several such sites and selected those that will comply with the stringent quality standards,” the ambassador said.

The parties reached a tentative agreement on the types and amounts of medicines to be manufactured by the joint ventures. “I hope that by the end of the year we will make up our mind on the technological cycle taking into account the markets of the neighboring states. For countries like Tajikistan that is a WTO member, certification is a rather important matter. I believe we will complete certification and will be able to produce enough Belarusian medicines for all,” the diplomat added.

The products made by the joint ventures are to be shipped to Afghanistan as well. The capacity of Afghanistan's market is several times bigger than that of Tajikistan.

Apart from that, Tajikistan is interested in the production of vaccines. Belarus keeps receiving proposals to set up a vaccine-manufacturing company.
