Belarus' organic food export to Russia may reach $400,000

MINSK, 3 March (BelTA) - Russia is ready to purchase Belarusian organic food products worth $400,000, Belarus' Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Vladimir Grakun said at a roundtable held in the House of Representatives on 3 March to discuss the draft law on organic farming, BelTA informs.

Today in Belarus there are 20 manufacturers of organic food products, including farms, private plots, and big companies, for example, the Zhdanovichi agricultural complex. “We have the opportunity to provide our people with organic food products and also sell them abroad. The Russian Federation is ready to purchase $400,000 worth of such products,” Vladimir Grakun said.

He stressed the importance of the draft law on organic farming which will help regulate the sector. The document envisages the certification of organic food products and their manufacture. The products will be marked by special label “Organic product”. Along with organic farming Belarus is also engaged in the scientific research. A number of the state scientific programs are currently in progress, the deputy minister added.

The roundtable discussed the issues of economic efficiency of organic farming. The development of this sector in Belarus will help increase exports and create more jobs, said Evgeny Ablameiko, the chairman of the standing commission on agrarian policy of the House of Representatives.

As it was reported, the draft law on organic farming will have to pass the first reading at the spring session of the House of Representatives.
