Belarus, Moldova to cooperate in seed production

CHISINAU, 12 August (BelTA) - Belarus and Moldova will intensify cooperation in seed production, BelTA learned from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Moldova.

The matter was discussed during a meeting between Moldova's Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Eduard Grama and Director General of the Research and Practical Center for Arable Farming of Belarus' National Academy of Sciences Fyodor Privalov and Director of the Polesye Crop Institute Leonid Shimansky.

The meeting was a continuation of the discussion which was started during the recent visit of the delegation of Moldova's agriculture ministry to Belarus. The parties welcomed the new partnership between Porumben Institute of Plant Growing and the Research and Practical Center for Arable Farming of Belarus' National Academy of Sciences. It will help promote the joint production and supply of seeds to the market of Belarus, and cooperation in seed selection.

The parties examined the principle of cooperation, which will underlie the proposals to be included in the intergovernmental memorandum. The latter will provide the guarantees to the parties, and will specify their obligations and responsibilities.

Porumben Institute of Plant Growing is Moldova's only scientific institution with a full selection cycle, which is engaged in the production of hybrid corn seeds.

The institute was recognized at numerous international competitions and exhibitions. Porumben has recently registered three varieties of hybrid corn in the State Registry of Romania. These varieties will be included into the database of 28 EU countries.

Today the major part of farmlands in Moldova is sowed with Porumben corn seeds, which are also popular in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Romania and other countries.
