Belarus, Lithuania agree not to raise rail transit tariffs in 2016

MINSK, 6 October (BelTA) – Belarusian Railways and Lithuanian Railways agreed not to raise the tariffs for the carriage of transit goods through the territories of Belarus and Lithuania in 2016, reads a memorandum of cooperation in the transit transport of goods by rail, BelTA has learnt.

Belarusian Railways and Lithuanian Railways signed the memorandum of cooperation on the sidelines of the Belarusian Transport Week. After the signing of the document the head of Belarusian Railways Vladimir Morozov said: "For us this is an important step - creating competitive conditions in the provision of services. By these actions, we are creating the conditions for improving the competitiveness of the route going to Kaliningrad Oblast through Belarus.” The head of Belarusian Railways noted that, in general, the project is aimed at the long-term perspective.

According to Belarusian Railways, in January-August 2015 the transit of goods to Lithuania and back via Belarus amounted to 3.1 million tonnes. During the same period, the aggregate volume of export and import freight rail traffic to Lithuania was approximately 11 million tonnes. The export traffic from Belarus to Lithuania went up by 12.5%.
