Belarus in talks with Ukraine over electricity import in 2016

MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) - Belarus is in talks with Ukraine over the electricity import in 2016, First Deputy Director General - Chief Engineer of the Belarusian national electrical company Belenergo Alexander Sivak told a press conference dedicated to the Power Engineers' Day.

"This issue is not easy. It is at an early stage of discussion,” Alexander Sivak noted. He said that the talks were initiated by the Ukrainian side. When negotiating with Ukraine, Belarus uses a pragmatic approach considering the current situation in Ukraine.

In October 2104 Ukraine stopped the export of electricity to Belarus. The Ukrainian side took this decision in connection with the increase in electricity consumption in central and northern parts of the country, and in view of the lack of fuel for electricity generation in those regions. Belarus replaced partially the electricity import from Ukraine with the import from Russia. In addition, Belarus increased its own generation by employing additional equipment. Last year, Belarus initially expected to import 3 billion kWh from Ukraine and about 1 billion kWh from Russia, but had to change the volumes.
