Belarus' foreign currency assets up 1.4% in May 2017

MINSK, 15 June (BelTA) - Belarus' official reserve assets and other assets in foreign currencies climbed up by 1.4% in May 2017 to total $5.854 billion as of 1 June 2017, BelTA learned from the latest statistics report of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus.

In the structure of foreign currency assets of Belarus' government agencies and official institutions reserve assets amounted to $5.238 billion as of 1 June, up from $5.108 billion as of 1 May. Of the total sum convertible currency assets made up $2.346 billion, Special Drawing Rights amounted to $514.7 million, the value of gold (including borrowed gold) was estimated at $1.884 billion, while other reserve assets totaled $493.3 million.

Other assets in foreign currency and gold outside the reserve assets (liquid assets in banks with a rating below investment grade in accordance with Fitch Ratings, Standard & Poor's, and Moody's Investors Service) amounted to $616.1 million as of 1 June. This number included deposits ($605 million) and gold deposits ($11 million).

The amount of money the Belarusian government agencies and official institutions are expected to spend over the course of one year was estimated at $5.753 billion as of 1 June. The money will have to be paid on loans and securities. Belarus' contingent liabilities in foreign currency may require paying out nearly $1.162 billion within 12 months after 1 June 2017.
