Belarus ensures strict control over safety of food raw materials

MINSK, 19 June (BelTA) – Belarus has established strict multi-level control over the safety of food raw materials, head of the veterinary inspectorate of the Department for Veterinary and Food Control of the Agriculture and Food Ministry of Belarus Vitaly Dubikovsky said at a press conference on 19 June, BelTA has learned.

“The country has ensured stringent and multi-level control over the safety of food raw materials. It starts from a production venue. For example, a milk producer carries out certain checks required by the law before he ships the product to processing companies. When milk reaches processing companies, another series of checks is conducted. After milk is processed, the final product undergoes a round of safety checks. In 2017 violations of safety requirements were registered in only some 0.1% of cases taking into consideration that all types of food raw materials were examined,” Vitaly Dubikovsky said.

He underlined that the Belarusian food safety control system is in compliance with international standards. When Belarusian enterprises seeking to export to a certain country welcome foreign inspectors, the entire safety control system, from raw materials to final products, is evaluated. Inspectors from various countries have confirmed that our safety control system meets their requirements. In fact, several Belarusian enterprises have obtained the right to supply their dairy and fish products to the European Union, and beef and dairy products to China, he said.

Head for food safety at the National Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health Via Shukevich told the press conference about food safety checks at Belarusian markets. “State sanitary control over the safety of products sold at domestic markets is continuous. The most common violations of safety rules include violation of storage requirements (35%), absence of documents confirming product quality and safety (17%), absence of identification marks or improper marking (12%), sales of products beyond their expiration date (8%).
