Belarus calls on EAEU to speed up development of common gas and oil markets

KAZAN, 26 May (BelTA) – The development of the common markets of gas, oil, and oil products in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) should be accelerated, Belarusian Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said at the session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Kazan on 26 May, BelTA has learned.

Andrei Kobyakov noted that the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union stipulates that the single market of electric power is to be formed by 1 July 2019, which means that the member states have some two years to complete the procedures. “As for other common markets in related sectors, we have agreed to develop them by 2025. Given the high level of dependency of the electric power market on the gas market, we suggest joining our efforts to speed up the development of the single gas market in the EAEU and launch it before the deadline of 2025 established in the EAEU Treaty,” the prime minister stressed.

Belarus also suggests using a similar approach when drafting the agreement on the common markets of oil and oil products. “We believe that the EAEU Treaty sets the latest possible deadlines. Accelerating the development of the common energy market should in no way be viewed as a violation of the treaty or as a move against the Eurasian economic integration. This would be a considerable contribution to the consolidation of the union's foundation, which could give an impetus to further development of our economies,” the Belarusian head of government emphasized.
