Year of Science

On 23 December 2016 Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko signed the decree to declare 2017 the Year of Science.

The main purpose of the decree is to bolster the role of science in the social and economic development of the country, enable comfortable conditions for preserving and developing the scientific potential, and shape Belarus' international image as a country with a high level of the intellectual and human capital.

Individual satellites for the remote sensing of the Earth are unable to perform some tasks. Groups of many satellites can but they are expensive. Groups of small-size satellites seem to be the feasible option. Several satellites like that can be inserted into orbit using one booster rocket.
Belarus bids to host international space congress in 2018

“It was an initiative of our cosmonauts to hold the international space congress in Belarus. Our country is ready to provide a platform for this event in 2018,” Sergei Zolotoi said. The letter with a proposal to host the congress has been signed by such famous Belarusian cosmonauts as Vladimir Kovalenok and Oleg Novitsky.

The state of the onboard systems of the first Belarusian satellite for the remote sensing of the Earth will be evaluated once again in mid-2018. If the satellite is still in working condition and the projections are positive, the operational life may be extended one more time.

“We are currently in talks with Vietnam and Kazakhstan on the operation of our satellites in the cluster. If all the issues are settled, we will be able to exchange space information,” said Sergei Zolotoi.
Private investments to help build Belarusian satellite BKA-2

Sergei Zolotoi remarked that the BKA-2 project will rely on public private partnership principles. “The ground infrastructure will be modernized using state funds while the satellite itself will be financed by private investors,” said the official.
Belarus to start making BKA-2 satellite in Q1 2017

Financing will become available in Q1 2017. “The project has already begun. It is proceeding now upon initiatives of the manufacturing company and the customer. We expect the financing of the main work to begin in Q1 2017,” said Sergei Zolotoi. He noted that the satellite is scheduled for launch in late 2019.
Belarus plans BKA-2 launch from Vostochny Cosmodrome in 2019

“We plan the launch of BKA-2 in late 2019, perhaps in early 2020. We are currently considering the Vostochny Cosmodrome,” said Sergei Zolotoi, Director of the R&D enterprise Geoinformation Systems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
