Year of Science

On 23 December 2016 Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko signed the decree to declare 2017 the Year of Science.

The main purpose of the decree is to bolster the role of science in the social and economic development of the country, enable comfortable conditions for preserving and developing the scientific potential, and shape Belarus' international image as a country with a high level of the intellectual and human capital.

The second congress of Belarusian scientists took place in Minsk on 12-13 December. The congress' resolution was prepared as a result of the plenary session on 13 December. After that the text was improved by a commission. The final text is now available to the general public.

The most important achievements of Belarusian science include the development of a portable supercomputer, which can perform up to 20 trillion operations per second, exceeds the computing capacity of the original supercomputer SKIF by 2.5 times while occupying a much smaller package.
Belarusian hard-working scientists promised triple salary rate

The official said that public sector institutions are rather limited in their ability to raise salaries and give bonuses to scientists. “Now we will be able to considerably — by up to 300% — raise salaries for doctors of science, professors, senior research officers, leading researchers.”

The meeting also discussed the ways to expand and intensify sci-tech and innovative cooperation between the countries. The parties signed a protocol and the executive program on sci-tech and innovative cooperation for 2018-2019.

Belarus, Russia to create advanced planet scanning satellite

The executive said: “We are in negotiations with companies from various countries for the sake of creating equipment, including through joint efforts. The creation of a satellite for the remote sensing of Earth with an extremely high resolution is the closest project we can implement today, including for export purposes.”
