Year of Science

On 23 December 2016 Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko signed the decree to declare 2017 the Year of Science.

The main purpose of the decree is to bolster the role of science in the social and economic development of the country, enable comfortable conditions for preserving and developing the scientific potential, and shape Belarus' international image as a country with a high level of the intellectual and human capital.

Belarusian Geoinformation Systems now part of PanGeo Alliance

PanGeo Alliance is the first global consortium of Earth observation satellite operators. It was established in September 2014. It has implemented several projects since then, including making maps of territories of various countries.

Belarusian BelAZ to roll out prototype robot truck by year end

Automating driver's job, including full autonomous driving, is part of BelAZ's development strategy, said Alexander Yegorov. “We have a lab prototype now and are staging experiments on it. We intend to assemble the first development prototype by the end of the year,” said the BelAZ chief designer.

Future Belarusian economy-class electric car priced at about $14,000

Asked about possible prices for the economy-class electric car, the middle-range one, and the premium-class car, Vladimir Gusakov noted that the prices have been set at roughly $10,000-14,000 for the people's car, up to $20,000 for the middle-range car, with no price yet available for the premium car.

“We should not lag behind with our competences and scientific standards,” stressed the Belarusian leader. “In the near future nobody will want to buy combustion engine vehicles like hot cakes the way it was in the past. Compare this car to what we have created and aspire for these standards.”

The executive said: “We have already developed an electric bicycle. An electric scooter is the next step. A prototype is already being assembled. We intend to send it for trials by the end of the month. There are plans to retail about 500 electric scooters as early as H1 2018.”

Cuba interested in cooperation with Belarus in microbiology, nanotechnologies

“You have a considerable scientific potential. Cuban science develops vigorously. Many scientific interests of Belarus and Cuba coincide. But our cooperation is insufficient,” said the chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
